Pinebound, the bio-based backing for carpet tiles
The backing is the underside of the carpet tile. It gives the tile its shape, keeps it flat, and ensures that it still has that shape years later. Until now, we have always done that with modified bitumen. From now on, it can also be done with resin from coniferous trees.
Pinebound is a biocomposite backing made largely from pine resin. That resin is a residual product released during the processing of softwood, so we work with material that already exists. Around that natural core, we build a backing that is every bit as robust as our familiar bitumen backing.
The name says it all. The backing is literally bound to the carpet. And it connects the tile to the natural world from which the material originates.
Strength from a natural core
Together with the other components, the resin forms a composite core with good dimensional stability. The tile stays flat, keeps its shape, and withstands heavy use. In that respect, Pinebound does what a traditional backing does, with a natural material composition.
A lower environmental footprint per square metre
Bitumen is a residual petroleum product. In Pinebound, we replace it with plant-based components and have adapted the production process accordingly. As a result, the environmental footprint of every square metre of backing we make is reduced.
A clean core, even at the end of its life
The core of Pinebound is bitumen-free and contains no harmful substances. Do you work with specifications that place strict requirements on materials? Then you know exactly what’s in the carpet with Pinebound.
Pinebound or Greenbase?
Greenbase remains in our range. Anyone who chooses the modified bitumen backing with chalk from 70% recycled material and the associated acoustic properties can simply continue to do so.
