Choosing the right floor covering for a school, council building or care home isn’t a decision you make on instinct. There are budgets to justify, safety standards to meet, and floors that need to hold up to daily use for years on end, often without a major renovation window in sight.

Start here. A primary school corridor sees very different traffic than a meeting room in a council building. For high-footfall areas, look for tiles with a high wear rating (EN 1307 classification) and consider whether certain zones – entrances, stairs, heavily used routes – need a more performance specification than the rest of the floor.
Carpet tiles in a contract quality are rated for exactly this kind of use. The majority of Tapibel’s range carries a Class 33 rating, meaning they’re tested and certified for heavy contract use. Ask your supplier which classification applies to each product.
In public buildings, cleaning efficiency matters. Ask whether the tiles have been tested for cleanability. Not just surface staining, but deep cleaning cycles over time. Some carpet tile collections are made with yarns that have specific performance properties built in, making them more resistant to soiling. Accidents happen. Stains, scuffs, damage near a fire door. One of the biggest practical advantages of carpet tiles over broadloom is that you can replace single tiles without touching the rest of the floor. But this only works if the product remains available.

It’s also worth ordering a small surplus when you place your order. Keeping a few tiles in stock means you’re covered for repairs without having to reorder.
For public buildings, this is non-negotiable. Depending on the type of building and region, you’ll need specific fire classification certificates (typically CfL-S1 or BfL-S1 under EN 13501-1). Always request the full technical data sheet and verify compliance with local building regulations before specifying.
